Industrial Product Design Process

What is involved in product design? What steps have to be completed in order to bring an approved product on the market?

Hochstrasser Mechdesign would show within this Blog a possible way to do it and share some experiences.

 

The Industrial Product Design Process is based on the experience of Hochstrasser Mechdesign and will be used for develop and design products.


The process is divided into two parts.

First Process: Industrial Product Design

Second Process: Mechanical Product Design

 

Important is, that based on the product and design requirements the process can be adapted.

The Industrial Product Design process begins with a first contact (meeting) with the client, he brief us about his Product ideas and the field where the product should be used. After a simple research phase the first hand-sketches will follow. We will brief our first product design representations with the Client to give him a feeling what his product could looks like and what we can do. The final product may look different from these sketches in this stage.


If the client is convinced of us so we expect some marketing specifications. This means that for the next two steps of design, it is very important to know how the focus   groups are and to know their needs.

 

After analyzing the requirements from marketing we will start with the research phase. This includes: 

  • Research into User Needs and Desires
  • Research into Physical and Cultural Environments
  • Patent and Prior Art Search
  • Research into Sustainable Solutions
  • Research into Current State-of-the-Art

 

If the Design conception phase is finished we starts to develop three different Form Prototypes based on convenient features:

  • Functionality,
  • Ergonomics,
  • Safety,
  • Usability
  • User-friendliness,
  • Care and Maintenance
  • Package Design (Interior)

After a usability and ergonomic study the Form prototypes and results will be briefed with the client. He select his favorite and can give us additional inputs for the next industrial product design stage.

 

Now we starts with to develop the visible design based on the best Form prototype.

 

Product Language functions - sensory functions

  • Formal Aesthetic Functions
  • Colors
  • Materials
  • Symbolic aspects, semantic functions
  • Signs Functions - tactile, olfactory and acoustic signs
  • Symbolic functions - social aspects, cultural and religious aspects, status, peer pressure, target groups
  • Corporate Identity
    • Branding
    • Appearance, identity
    • Corporate Design advertising

 

Ecological function - Sustainable Development

  • Life cycle (durability, technical availability)
  • Disposal

 

Economic function

  • Manufacturing Technologies
  • Materials
  • Transport, storage requirements - size, stacking, folding

 

The Outputs of this stage are three Design prototypes if possible with real color and materials.  A first production price proposal and shell structure 3D CAD data are also included.

 

After an acceptance study with the three prototypes and the client is satisfied he will select his favorite.

Now the Industrial Product Design process is finished and with additional mechanical and functional specifications we go into the Mechanical Product Design process.

 

This process looks shorter but is as complex as the Industrial Design process.

 

It starts with a solution finding process, brainstorming and reverse engineering. This is for parent and child functions. We will evaluate and select the best solutions.

 

The next step is the pre-construction, it includes:

  • Pre-Calculations
  • Volume Structure in the CAD
  • Design Reviews, FMEA
  • DFM, Design for manufacturing
  • Involve possible Supplyer

 

This part of the Mechanical Product Design Process is finished with a rapid Function prototype and a positive feedback from the client.

 

The process goes forward with the Detail Construction.

  • Calculations
  • Detail Volume Structure
  • Maybe a 2. Rapid Function prototype
  • Renderings
  • Animation
  • Mechanical Tests

The output of this is a real Function prototype, real production price and  a product documentation including calculations, renderings, animations, and all product data. This detail construction will be repeated until the client is satisfied.

 

Now you are free to claim the service: Support during Production and MOL (Maintenance of Line).

With this step the process ends.
